Located in Canberra, the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference is the permanent collegial assembly of the Bishops of Australia. Formally established in 1966, the Conference meets biannually in May and November. To ensure that the work of the Conference continues between plenary meetings, the Conference also comprises a Permanent Committee, eleven Commissions and Episcopal Panels and a General Secretariat. The Conference seeks a Chief Operating Officer who will work in close collaboration with the General Secretary and who will manage the operations of the various portfolios of the Conference to deliver strategic initiatives and ensure its ongoing development and viability. The portfolios include financial management, ICT, operations, strategy and planning, risk, compliance and governance. The COO works at a high level within the Conference, overseeing the implementation of strategic initiatives, strategic evaluation of alternatives and decision-making. Resolution of issues requires synthesis of facts, detailed analysis, interpretation and evaluation of relevant data, and close investigation of alternative approaches to problems. An understanding of Gospel values and the principles of Catholic Social Teaching, and a willingness to work within the mission and identity of the Catholic Church, will be important aspects of the role.
