Welcome to the National Liturgical Music Council webpages!
The National Liturgical Music Council (originally the National Liturgical Music Board) was established by the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference in 2005 to provide advice to the Bishops Commission for Liturgy on matters pertaining to music in Roman Catholic liturgical worship. The members of the Council have formal qualifications in music and in liturgy and have extensive experience in performing, preparing, teaching and researching liturgical music.
The members of the Council are drawn from across Australia and have wide-ranging experience and expertise in teaching, performing and leading liturgical music in parishes, cathedrals, schools and universities. Together the Council members reflect a broad spectrum of liturgical music approaches, contexts and styles. The current Council members were appointed in May 2016 for an initial term, which was extended for three years beginning in November 2018. The Council members bring different gifts and keen insights to the important work of animating the liturgical music of Australia’s cathedrals, parishes, schools and universities.
The members of the National Liturgical Music Council are:
Professor Clare Johnson, Chair (Melbourne)
Dr. Andrew Cichy (Brisbane)
Ms. Fiona Dyball (Melbourne)
Ms. Jacinta Jakovcevic (Perth)
Mr. Paul Mason (Wollongong)
Mrs. Donrita Reefman (Sale)
Dr. Paul Taylor, Secretary (Melbourne) (ex officio)
Dr. Anthony Young (Brisbane)
This website contains some valuable resources to advise and support people who are responsible for preparing and facilitating the performance of liturgical music for parish and school liturgies.
- Catholic Worship Book II is “the official liturgical music resource for the Catholic Church in Australia” and was published by the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference in April 2016.
- Lists of recommended hymns and songs first approved by the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference in 2009 and revised following the publication in 2016 of Catholic Worship Book II.
- Official advice on the role of Music in the Order of Mass. This advice is drawn principally from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (2011) and has been specifically endorsed by the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference in Catholic Worship Book II.
The NLMB meets regularly by teleconference and at face-to-face meetings several times a year. Constructive feedback and commentary on our work is always welcomed and should be addressed to the Secretary, Dr. Paul Taylor.
