In anticipation of the XV Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops on Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment to be held in Rome in October 2018, and with the encouragement of Pope Francis that the Church to “go beyond what is familiar and known in order to encourage discussion”, youth from across Australia were invited to participate in a national survey responding to some of the key questions outlined in the Preparatory Document.
More than 15,000 young Australians completed the survey. A summary of the survey responses, together with feedback from many dioceses, formed a national report that has been provided to the Synod of Bishops. Many other countries have done likewise. The feedback from young people around the world helped shape the Working Document for the 2018 Synod of Bishops.
Archbishop of Sydney Anthony Fisher OP and Melbourne Auxiliary Bishop Mark Edwards OMI will participate in the 2018 Synod of Bishops, under the prayerful guidance and leadership of the Holy Father.
As well as supporting preparation for the Synod of Bishops, the survey process was also a critical tool to help the Church in Australia prepare for the 2018 Year of Youth, which began at the Australian Catholic Youth Festival in December 2017.
